Montana Creek

Fri, 08/08/2014 - 3:35am -- lilley

Montana Creek is only a few miles outsiide Talkeenta and real close to Peter's house.  This part of the creek is easily accessed so it's fished pretty hard by locals and tourist.  But we found fish.

We walked up this evening, started about 8:30 pm.  We found a few chum and king salmon starting to spawn but not many rainbows or grayling.  The creek is closed to salmon fishing.

Talkeetna, Alaska

Peter Mathiesen and I have been friends since the early 80's.  We have both found a way to make a living doing what we love to do, hunting, fishing and writing.

A few years ago, Peter and his wife Sandy moved to Talkeetna, Alaska from St Louis in search of a slower and quieter life.  He finished building a house on a small lake and started guiding on the many rivers in the area with a resident and Bed & Breakfast owner, Tom Redman.

Generation patterns here on Lake Taneycomo have been fairly consistent this past week.  Our water has been off every night and morning, running in the afternoon until just after dark.  The "running" part has varied a bit.  Most days it's been about three units, but it's been as little as one unit.

Burckhardt 1 530

This weather is pretty sweet, isn't it?!  We keep thinking that any day now it's going to turn into a "normal" summer and become blazing hot, but it hasn't  yet!  One real nice thing about this cooler, drier weather is that there's no fog on Lake Taneycomo early and late in the day.  Some like the fog, but I like to fish early and late and don't like  driving through a wet, cold fog.  That's just me!

Serenitys brown 530

With little rain and not much change in lake levels, generation pattern has been the same the last few days. Low daytime temperatures have also helped -- that is to keep the water from running here on Lake Taneycomo. Generation has occurred only late in the afternoon for only an hour, not reaching over one unit.
