All we need?

2 Peter 1:2-  Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.  Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.  For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

There's a ton here to think about but I want to hit the high points.

There's one theme that runs through this passage and that's "knowledge".  Knowledge of Jesus, of the Father.  How do you get such knowledge?  By reading the Word of God; by sitting under good and wise teachers and mentors; by acting on what the Word says and what you hear God impressing on your heart to do.

Does it have benefits?  Can't get much better than eternal benefits.  Can it get any better than adding characteristics like goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love, especially if it's God inspired, God changing, real change and not a fleeting feeling.

"His divine power" is available.  It's been given, given so that we can have a godly life which includes being apart of the divine nature.  What?  Divine nature, God's nature.  How can that be?  Easy.  We were created in God's image so if we are redeemed by the blood of Jesus, it's not a far jump to believe we can and do participate in His nature.  What is that?  That is for another study.

We can escape corruption in the world caused by evil desires.  How can this be?  We as men are bombarded daily with temptation and evil desires to the point that we feel dirty just in the temptation, not really sinning.  And the other lie of sin is that we forget that we have been cleansed from our past sins, most of the time because we have removed ourselves from fellowship and reading the Word.

Believe it.  God would not have said it unless it was true and obtainable.  We are forgiven, cleansed.  We can resist the devil and he will flee.  Our flesh and old nature is redeemed by the reading of the Word and the fellowship of the saints.  Do it!  Put yourself in a position of accountability with someone to do the right thing.  Don't waste any more time.
